Removing the Rust From Chrome Trim and Bumpers

Chrome bumpers and trim can still be seen on lots of motors and nothing looks better than a beautiful shiny chrome bumper but unfortunately they are also very prone to rust. Rust can attack all of the metal on your car but somehow it really spoils the whole aesthetics of an otherwise fabulous motor if the chrome bumper is rusty and pitted. Keeping a chrome bumper and other accessories looking shiny and new is not something to be scared of.

The good news is that if you keep on top of the rust situation it is pretty easy to keep chrome bumpers shiny using some very ordinary household supplies.

All you need is:

• Some aluminum foil
• Cola – no, it’s not to drink
• Bowl
• Warm water
• Chrome cleaner
• Clean cloth – lint free is best
• Wire wool
• Buffer

The aluminum foil can be used to remove the smallest of rust spots and oxidization – scrunch it up into a loose ball then even it out between your palms, a bit like making a snowball.

The next step is to pour the cola into the bowl, you’ll need quite a lot so don’t try saving any for a drink later. Then dip the foil into the cola and rub the rust spots vigorously, concentrating on small areas just a few inches across. Don’t forget to keep dipping the foil into the cola to keep it nicely coated. This will help to clean away the rust and prevent you from scratching the surface of the chrome.

Keep rubbing the chrome with the foil until the rust spots start to disappear, they will start to dissipate before your eyes so keep on dipping and rubbing until they do. It won’t take long and is well worth the effort.

When all of the rust spots have been successfully removed from the chrome it is time to start cleaning the bumper with a clean cloth and warm water – this helps to remove the cola which will become sticky if it is left on the surface. It really does need to be washed away for the best results. After you’ve washed the cola away wipe the area dry with the clean cloth and if you do happen to notice another rust spot or two simply start the process again.

Larger areas of rust need a different, tougher approach. Take the wire wool and chrome cleaner and start to polish the affected areas. Yes, it is a little abrasive but is all in all a much gentler approach than using something like sand paper or another type of abrasive material. Rub the rusted areas with the chrome cleaner and wire wool gently using a circular motion taking care not to make any scratch marks. After you’ve dealt with the rust spots you can polish the chrome and buff it up to a lovely shine. Just keep going until you notice the difference, the rust disappears and the beautiful chrome can shine through.
